Alcoholism is a severe problem in Washington, especially adolescent alcoholism. Substance abuse resources in Washington state that 4 in 5 of every Washingtonian youth have already had their first taste of alcohol before they pass out from their high school. A very significant number of these, almost half, will be strong alcoholics by the time they leave their school.

Binge drinking has become a very big problem too. Two out of three young persons in Washington indulge in binge drinking, where they have more than five drinks of alcohol, straight up. These people slowly develop more and more cravings for the drink. As the level of alcohol accumulated in their bodies increase, they will find more craving for the substance and that will push them further into alcoholism.

That is the reason the alcohol awareness campaign has come down so strongly on teen alcohol abuse in Washington. The motive is to stop the habit when the people are still young as it will only exacerbate as time goes on. If a person consumes alcohol before he or she is an adult, there are four times more chances that they will become alcohol addicts.

What is more serious about teen alcohol addiction in Washington is that these youth can succumb to other forms of addiction once they get used to the high that alcohol creates. Marijuana is the strongest contender because it is easily available in Washington. But even the high created by marijuana can wear off, and when that happens, they can get on with other forms of addiction such as cocaine, heroin and even the most deadly of them all, methamphetamine.
