
Tennessee has been always quite aware of its drug problem and in the last ten years, it has redoubled its measures in trying to solve the problem in the most effective way possible. The various state agencies have collaborated with the local police departments, the DEA and the federal drug abuse organizations to bring the right kinds of solutions to reduce the prevalence of drug abuse and drug addiction in Tennessee.
The trends over the past few years indicate the following:-
1. Cocaine is the main contributor to the problem of substance abuse in Tennessee. It is also significantly consumed in the form of crack cocaine. Both cocaine and crack cocaine figure quite prominently in the total number of admissions to drug rehab in Tennessee and the overall drug influenced crime rate within the state.
2. Next to cocaine, methamphetamine is the most popularly used drug in Tennessee. Methamphetamine is trafficked into the state from the neighboring states and is also produced in a large extent within the clandestinely operating meth labs within the state. The prevalence of methamphetamine addiction in Tennessee has increased in the past ten years. Recently, purer forms of methamphetamine, such as crystal meth, also known as ice, are making their presence felt in the Tennessee mainland.
3. Along with methamphetamine, other drugs that are captivating the attention of the youth in Tennessee are the club drugs. These drugs are distributed mainly in the nightclub circuit of the state. Prominent club drugs in Tennessee are Ecstasy, LSD, GHB and ketamine.
4. Due to its geographical location, Tennessee is also a major producer of cannabis, which is used to produce hashish and marijuana. The last ten years have seen cannabis emerging as Tennessee’s main cash crop.
5. Heroin abuse in Tennessee is quite restricted. Instead, people are more into prescription drug abuse. Common prescription drugs used are Oxycodone, Percocet and Percodan.
