Staying sober is a day to day process and many people struggle with their sobriety for their entire lives. There are many ways to prevent relapse and reduce your risk of slipping up when you are having a difficult time with your sobriety after addiction treatment.

The first thing you need to remind yourself of is how you got where you are today. You haven’t been sober for no reason, you have been working at it. Stick with your plan that you made in drug rehab and keep doing what you have been doing to maintain your sobriety.

That said when you are going through difficult times and temptation begins to crop up, you may need to step up your plan with some added tools. Try to attend more meetings for extra support and gather more contacts at those meetings for additional support in between meetings. Get in touch with your sponsor or therapist for added support and addiction treatment programs. Get in touch with your natural support system, like family and friends that can help you stay busy and happy. Increase your counseling sessions or get back in counseling if the problem seems to be overwhelming or it is escalating. Keep the numbers of crisis hotlines readily available so that if you can’t reach your normal support system you have somewhere that you can turn for help. It is important to stay proactive when you are having times of difficulty in your sobriety and your life. Being aware of your triggers and knowing when you need to step it up a notch is an important element in successful sobriety.
