It is not uncommon for people who have dealt with an drug addiction to have one or more relapses after a short time of abstaining from use and even after a long time abstaining from use. Recovery is a life long process and unfortunately relapse is par for the course.

Though relapse is common it can be extremely frustrating for patients and for those who love them. Often, they have already been through a lot and relapse is almost to much to bare. Unfortunately, the desire to use a drug once a craving is triggered is an overwhelming feeling and it can sometimes lead to bad choices and disappointment. Even though recovered addicts know all the terrible negative consequences that may result from use, the calling can be to strong for them to resist in moments of weakness.

Not everyone responds to drugs the same way and many people are more capable of recovery then others. There is a reason for this, our brains response to drugs are different in different people. The impulses and responses to chemicals do vary in different people.

Relapse after recovery is always something that recovering addicts need to be aware of. There are many treatment programs that can help recovering addicts after treatment and support them in maintaining their sober lifestyle. However, if an addict relapses there are also many programs designed specifically for addicts how have been to addiction treatment previously. Relapse is more common than not and it is important for an addict who relapses to pick them self up and get back in treatment immediately.
