The law has to protect people from the crimes that some drugs addicts commit. Drug addicts have a high probability of entering into the world of crime simply because they need large amounts of money to fend for their habit and their lifestyle does not allow them to follow any method of continuous employment.
Due to this, crime seems appealing to people who are actively into drug addiction. But since it is the responsibility of the law to protect society from all kinds of criminal offenders, it needs to come down strongly on drug users who break the law too. When a person with a history of drug addiction is convicted of a crime and it is quite obvious that the drug abuse is a main contributor for the crime, then the law will put up two choices in front of the person. The first choice will be to undergo a sentence in jail, and the second option would be to undertake treatment for the addiction in a drug rehab center. Most people at this juncture choose the drug rehab over the jail. This becomes a wise choice because even in jail they will not be getting their supply of drugs. At least in the drug rehab, there will be ways and means in which they can answer their withdrawal symptoms.
Drug addict offenders who are ordered treatment by the law are mostly put under residential drug addiction treatment in a therapeutic center. This is where many recovering drug addicts live together in sobriety in a community format. The period of stay in a residential drug addiction treatment center is from six months to a year after which some serious criminals will have to continue a shortened jail sentence.
