The Western medical system is an extremely drug-oriented entity, and millions of medications are purchased every year. As a result, many people have become addicted to one or more substances and drug use has become a huge problem in the United States.

Toxicity exists in small quantities in even over-the-counter or OTC medications, with alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine being the most prevalent addictive components of the chemicals being used. The addictive potential is both physical as well as psychological, and when consumption is stopped, withdrawal symptoms are often present. The process that is employed to expel these toxins from the body is known as detoxification, and this is the first step when an individual embarks on the road to recovery. Once the detoxification process is complete, the individual is that much closer to regaining a normal quality of life.

Normally, there are three stages involved in the drug detoxification process:

1. emotional
2. medical
3. physical

The counseling of patients while they are enduring the detoxification process comprises the emotional stage. When the individual is in the medical stage, a doctor constantly monitors their progress, ensuring against complications as they complete this stage. The introduction of a nutritionist into the program usually occurs once the medical stage has detoxified the individual’s body, therefore signaling the beginning of the physical stage of the process. The balanced diet that the nutritionist lines out during this stage of drug treatment enables the individual to start building up the physical state of their bodies.

If a drug addict is going to be cured by going through treatment, there are two key elements to the equation. Since certain withdrawal symptoms are oftentimes dangerous and even life threatening, it is critical that a person be in a treatment center to be detoxified. It is also essential that the individual be under constant medical supervision while going through the detoxification process. Going through the detoxification process is no simple task, and whatever conviction and help that the individual can get from family and friends will no doubt make their recovery a little easier to deal with.
