In recent times, a lot of study has been conducted into drug addiction being a psychological disease along with being a physiological one. It is the nervous system that keeps asking for the substance the person is addicted to.

The mind has a big role to play in making the person ask for the substance again and again. Not just that, but it is the mind that needs to be strengthened in order to make the person resolve to fight against the alcohol addiction. Hence, the psychological aspect of addiction works at both the causative as well as at the treatment levels. That is all the more reason why it is important to work at the nervous system to eliminate the addiction. This can be done only when the addict is made to feel important as a person.

Very simple things like merely addressing the person by his or her name during the addiction treatment program goes a long way in making the person feel more at ease about the treatment. Professionals also use methods like chatting with the people about their friends, their families, their work, their past life, etc. Why is this important? Subconsciously, it creates a yearning in the person to go back to that fruitful part of his or her life. If nothing else, it helps to strengthen the determination of the person to fight against the addiction.

Patients who are undergoing rehabilitation programs in treatment centers that have a personal approach are much stronger than patients who are in rehab centers that follow generic patterns.
