Addiction is complicated. It is at least complicated to overcome. It is not, however, complicated to understand. It’s a series of choices. The addict is at some point exposed to drugs. It is then their choice to stay or leave that situation. Then they are faced with the choice to use the drugs or decline. Then the addict moves on to the choice to get drugs of their own. The addict then chooses the frequency of their drug abuse. Some addicts even move on to the choice to sell drugs in order to support their own use. All of these choices belong to the addict. By the time the addict is seeking recovery it is starting to feel a lot less like choices. By that point it is starting to feel like needs.
The addicts biggest need at this point is one they may have just come to. The need for addiction recovery. The good news is, that is a choice as well. It is a lot simpler choice too. The addict will have to choose recovery every day.
Remember those two words “every day”. They will be what the addict needs to remember. There is no series of choices. There is only one choice, made repeatedly. The addict must choose “I will not succumb to my drug addiction, today”. Sounds simple, right? “Just today, I won’t use drugs.” But it isn’t going to be simple to do. Don’t expect to do it alone.
